Abstract : Polycarbonate possesses a number of attractive mechanical properties which permit its use in a variety of applications. However changes in these properties may result from modifications to the chemical structure of the polymer; hence an understanding of the effect on stability of such factors as heat, ultraviolet light, high energy radiation, oxidation and weathering is important if the plastic is to be used to best advantage. The physical effects of various degradative influences on the polymer are outlined and an attempt is made to interpret thses in terms of the underlying chemical changes. (Author)
