Abstract : Performance of atmospheric backscatter measuring systems as typified by the Impulsphysik Videograph B and AGA RTM-1 fog detectors for use in automatic control of fog signals is studied. Laboratory and Field Test programs covering 100,000 hours of operation were conducted to determine the effectiveness of these devices compared with visual observations. Ten geographical sites were selected for the field tests. Data is presented for both Videograph B performance and occurrence of inhomogeneous atmospheric conditions at each of these locations. Direct comparison tests comparing the two detectors with a 950 foot baseline transmissometer were made. Analysis is made concerning advisability of using the fog detectors for immediate unmanned automatic operation at remote sites. Possible methods of improving operation of low powered backscatter fog detectors operating in certain inhomogeneous atmospheric conditions are discussed. (Author)
