Abstract : Cholesterol is a component of many membranes but its function is not understood. The recent introduction of spin labels has provided a new tool for studying molecular interactions in natural and model membranes. The present report indicates that in addition to restricting the motions of phospholipids, cholesterol may alter the environment of the nitroxide residue of a spin-labelled lipid intercalated in lecithin liposomes. This is taken to suggest that in natural membranes cholesterol may play a role in controlling the position of some membrane components. (Author)
