Abstract : A technique is developed for evaluating the stress distribution in a thin-walled shallow, elastic, spherical membrane which contains either an eccentric aperture and symmetric load or a polar aperture and eccentrically located concentrated load. The aperture is circular in all cases. A catalogue of examples is presented which includes a uniformly pressurized spherical cap having a stress free non-polar opening; a spherical segment with an off-center aperture subjected uniform shear along its internal boundary; and a shallow spherical annulus subjected to an eccentrically located concentrated radial load, torque, shear, and moment. Wherever possible, the internal boundary of the annulus is rendered stress free. Where this cannot be accomplished the condition that the radial stress vanish at the aperture edge is imposed. No boundary conditions are prescribed at the outer edge. Numerical computations have been carried out for all examples treated, and are summarized in a series of graphs. (Author)
