Abstract : A mathematical model was developed to describe one-dimensional wave propagation in a resonating column of a material with a nonlinear constitutive relation. The nonlinear partial differential equation which resulted was solved using a finite differencing method, and a computer program was written to simulate a resonating column. The computer simulation program was used to find a dynamic nonlinear constitutive relation for a sand and a clay by a trial-and-error method. It was discovered that the constitutive relation for these soils found by using a pseudo-nonlinear method (which is based on linear theory) agreed surprisingly well with the constitutive relation found using a genuine nonlinear theory. Convergence studies for the finite-differencing method were also made. (Author)
