Abstract : During the development of new riverine craft for naval inshore warfare, several questions arose regarding service use in connection with prototypes evaluation and selection for production. Since the referenced documents for craft development did not provide adequate information on how the craft would be used to guide the contractors, the project office technical staff and the participating activities in their decisions, it was considered that a single reference document was required to define the overall configuration for the system, the mission profile and craft utilization, and the system effectiveness requirements. The paper briefly describes the major documents in the formal user-producer dialogue of the development cycle. The contents of a specific plan for use prepared for new generation craft in a river assault squadron are reviewed to illustrate the practical aspects. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the Plan For Use can be applied in an actual development. (Author)
