Abstract : The productivity of a rotary broach is 30-50 times as high as the productivity of ball burnishing tools and 5-10 times as high as the productivity of roller burnishing tools. The operating principle of the rotary broach is as follows: guide bar, freely carrying separator in which full-contact rollers of a given diameter are mounted at a certain angle and is inserted in a workpiece. After translational motion is communicated to the guide bar via supporting bearing, the rollers become wedged in (owing to the difference in the aperture diameters between the workpiece and the broach) and begine to roll over the surface to be machined (burnished), leaving on it helical tracks; the width of the track equals the length of the roller and the pitch of the spiral corresponds to the angle of adjustment of the roller with respect to the axis of the workpiece. The rollers cause the guide bar to rotate and move along its axis. The separator with the rollers also is endowed with rotational motion. (Author)
