Abstract : The repeated discontinuous yielding of three high-purity aluminum-copper alloys after different annealing treatments was investigated. The study included tensile testing at various strain rates, stress-relaxation experiments, optical and electron microscopy, and microprobe analysis. It was found that whereas the annealing temperature has almost no effect on the structure and tensile properties of the 1% Cu alloy, in the 3% Cu and 4.5% Cu alloys the effect is very marked. The strain-aging-induced negative slope in the flow-stress strain-rate relation, and therefore also discontinuous yielding behavior, are influenced by the heat treatment through the latter's governing the structure of the alloys.
