Abstract : A hypoxic isocapnic test was used to study 40 sea level (SL) subjects. The data suggest that a high elevation environment produces a sensitization of the peripheral chemorreceptors in SL subjects. The lower the response at SL the higher the response at HA. The possibility of using the hypoxic isocapnic test as a tool of predicting the degree of adaptation to altitude is discussed.
