Abstract : Depression of the third components of complement (C3) was found in acute phase of dengue shock syndrome as reported previously. This characteristic change of C3 activity indicates a possible role of C3 in the pathogenic mechanism involved in shock syndrome and further elucidation of immunological activity of highly purified C3 was performed. The results obtained in 12 months were as follows. Sheep erythrocytes sensitized with antibody and carrying on their surface the first four components of complement, (EAC'1423) are capable of adhering to human erythrocytes. Treatment of EAC'43 or EAC'4 with pronase, results in the removal of C'4 without affecting the antibody. Further elucidation of the molecular structure of C'3 in relation to its immunological activity was performed. Chemical modification by -SS -SH reagents also showed the difference of IA activity and hemolysis activity of C3 or EA43 cells. (Author)
