Abstract : The performance of a bandpass smooth limiter which is represented by the error function is analyzed when the input is a sum of two signals. Two input cases are considered: sine wave plus sine wave and sine wave plus narrowband Gaussian noise. Corresponding to various input ratios, output ratios of inband signals are obtained and displayed graphically as a function of a parameter q which specifies the degree of the limiter 'hardness' relative to the input level. One of the graphic results is the behavior of the 'captured limiter' as the limiter hardness is decreased. The error function characterization of the limiter is believed to be realistic since it is capable of describing a wide range of practical operating characteristics of limiters and saturated amplifiers. In the limit, when q = o, the smooth limiter becomes a linear amplifier, and the limit where q = infinity corresponds to an ideal hard limiter. The results corresponding to q = infinity are shown to agree with those known for the ideal hard limiter. (Author)
