Abstract : Kala azar (visceral leishmaniasis) was studied in adult dogs and puppies, experimentally infected intravenously with Leishmania donovani from infected hamsters. By various procedures the course of infection was evaluated using three geographic strains of the parasite (kenya, Sudan and Mediterranean). All three strains infected the dog but differences in the course of infection were noted, with the Mediterranean strain showing greater tendency to chronicity. Serum protein patterns and fluorescent antibody titers were followed and, in general, resemble findings reported for man and some other experimental animals. (Author)
