Abstract : A detailed analysis is presented of the theoretical firing of an implosion-driven hypervelocity launcher. Using hydrodynamic equations, a mathematical model is developed of the entire launcher cycle from the initiation of detonation in the hydrogen-oxygen gas through the detonation of the high-explosive PETN, the breaking of the diaphragm and acceleration of the projectile, the losses to the barrel walls from turbulent heat transfer, drag, and ablation, and the shocking of the air or gas ahead of the projectile. The loss calculations had not previously been applied to the launcher design. Wall and projectile losses appear to deserve serious treatment. Calculated velocities for the case studied range from 8 to 12 km/sec while similar experiments run to only 6 or 7 km/sec. Initial accelerations are too high to allow projectile survival; and some improvements are suggested. (Author)
