Abstract : The paper examines the problems encountered and the approaches followed in using telephone lines for high-speed data transmission. Factors which limit high-speed data transmission on telephone lines are described, and a discussion of unspecified channel impairments such as phase jitter, non-linear distortion, impulse noise is presented; multi-level signaling is explained. Adaptive and Preset Equalizers are considered and algorithms for the adjustment of tapped-delay-line filters to minimize distortion due to intersymbol interference and noise are surveyed. The optimum statistical solution to the detection of the received symbols is contrasted with the linear solution represented by the adjustable tapped-delay-line equalizer. The paper sets the stage for future reports on this topic under this grant. (Author)
