Abstract : Texture, predictions of sound velocity and wet density, along with position and thickness of potential sound reflectors in 66 piston cores are logged and described. Data have been matched to locations of acoustic stations completed under the Marine Geophysical Survey Project, U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office. Tentative statements are made concerning overall reflectivity of the Hatteras Abyssal Plain. Level areas of the northern half of the Plain should be characterized by very good sound reflection, central areas - moderate reflection, southwest corner good reflection, and southeast corner moderate reflection. Results suggest that effective use of the seafloor as an acoustic interface requires collaboration of acousticians, marine geologists and sedimentologists. (Author)
