Abstract : Bend formability of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V was studied over the temperature range 600C (1100F) to 950C (1750F) at strain rates from about 0.001/sec to 0.1/sec. The tests were made in three-point bending with a sharp punch and matching die. Independent data on the strain-rate hardening behavior of this alloy could be used to predict performance in continuous bending. Recovery under load, after the imposed straining was stopped, was essentially complete and zero-springback bends could be made with a perfectly sharp inner radius. The super-plasticity contribution enters more in the recovery period, when falling strain rate leads to a rising rate sensitivity and a flow stress that approaches zero. A few experiments were also made on a possible technique for encasing filaments in a matrix of Ti-6Al-4V by compression-extrusion in the superplastic state. (Author)
