Abstract : An electronic photoconductor scanner for image sensing is described which operates in direct contact with the page, thereby securing a high degree of compactness. Integral with the sensors is a light source and various transistor circuits which cause each of the photoconductors to be interrogated sequentially along the length of the array. The interrogation mechanism is a shift register which propagates a logical one digit along its length in synchronism with a clock. As this bit steps past a photoconductor, it causes the electrical output of the photoconductor to be shaped and gated onto a common output bus. The series of pulses so produced represent the state of illumination at the surface of the paper on to the photoconductors. A resolution of 100 lines per inch with seven shades of gray has been experimentally achieved at a high signal to noise ratio. (Author)
