Abstract : The deposition of V3Si and of quartz from line-source targets operated in balanced dipole pairs to generate an rf sputtering discharge is described. Results of the fabrication and test of superconducting V3Si films, of V3Si/quartz capacitors, and of a multiturn V3Si/quartz solenoid are described. The measurement of alternating-current losses in short sample hard superconducting niobium films are reported. A model based on a distribution of normal regions in the film and formulated in terms of strip inductance L and RL circuits is presented which describes the general features observed. A method of measuring small rotations in the plane of polarization of a light beam was developed so that the Faraday effect could be used to measure magnetic field distributions above thin superconducting films. A spatial resolution of 0.25 mm and a field sensitivity of 0.2 Oe. were obtained. The current distributions were calculated from the measured magnetic field distributions using numerical techniques. The measured distributions were compared to a coupled inductor model both for the case of an applied transport current and for a field-induced current flow. (Author)
