Abstract : The reflection of a finite elastic plane shock wave at a plane boundary is examined. A semi-inverse method of solution is used. Only angles of incidence which are less than a critical angle are considered in detail. In general there are three reflected waves which may be either simple waves or shock waves. It is found that either kind of reflected wave may be completely specified by a single parameter provided conditions ahead of the wave are known. Boundary conditions at the plane surface must be solved for the specifying parameters. A simple existence theorem is stated, critical angle cases are discussed, and several simple examples are presented. (Author)
