Abstract : Contact angles have been measured between a number of organic liquids and flat, moisture-treated surfaces of ammonium perchlorate. The results indicate that a moist ammonium perchlorate surface is completely wetted by hydrocarbon liquids of srface tension less than 34.5 mN/m (34.5 dyn/cm), but the same surface after treatment with Surfactant S101 is completely wetted only by hydrocarbon liquids of surface tension less than 21.5 mN/m (21.5 dyn/cm). The displacement of one liquid by another on the surface of ammonium perchlorate has been investigated in respect of water and the various liquid ingredients of the propellant. The dependence of the physical properties of plastic propellant on the binder/oxidant interface is discussed, together with some aspects of the problem of propellant ageing. (Author)
