Abstract : The 21 cm optical depth in the direction of Virgo A is 0.017 plus or minus 0.003 near the velocity of the peak of the galactic background emission, and the corresponding gas temperature lies within the range 180 - 460 degrees Kelvin. In the negative-velocity wing of the emission profile the optical depth is less than 0.002 which indicates a minimum gas temperature of 600K.
