Abstract : A qualitative test has been developed for the detection of ethylene glycol in crankcase oil. The method is suitable for use in the field where the early detection of ethylene glycol contamination of engine oil is of considerable importance. The procedure is uninvolved and requires a minimal amount of equipment. Ethylene glycol is oxidized to formic acid and formaldehyde with periodic acid; the formaldehyde is evolved with heat and detected using chromotropic acid. (Author)
