Abstract : The objectives of the manufacturing improvement program was to establish the applications and limitations of analytical approaches in closed-die forging. The study has been concerned mainly with the study of mechanics and interactions of important variables related to the workpieces, the dies, and the equipment selected for forging. Three industrial forging companies participated in the program in conducting forging trials using presses instrumented to determining loads, stresses, and energies used in forging various parts so that correlations between predicted and actual data could be made. Quantitative assessments were made of deformation rates, temperatures, flash geometries, part shapes, materials, and forces required in the forging of aluminum, steel, and titanium parts. (Author)
