Abstract : Temperature distribution in an indefinite cylinder subjected to external radiation has been studied; the body is supposed to be in interplanetary space and to receive radiant energy from the Sun. It has a cavity inside and its wall may have any thickness. It is supposed also to be a gray radiator and the influence on temperature distribution of internal and external radiation and of thermal conductivity is considered. On the contrary convection heat transfer within the object, as well as radiation emitted and reflected from stars and planets, is neglected. The governing equations have been derived; if the temperature is supposed to deviate slightly from the average, they may be linearized. Under these assumptions, a solution in form of Fourier series is found; the solutions of other authors for a thin-walled cylinder and for a solid one are seen to be two particular cases of it.
