Abstract : The synthesis of a promising polymeric precursor for graphite, a new all- hydrocarbon, highly phyenylated polyphenylene is described. The polymer was obtained by a Diels-Alder type reaction. It is thermally and oxidatively more stable than its nonphenylated analog, a high temperature stable polymer which is commercially available. The polymer decomposition temperature in vacuum is 550 C, which isslightly higher than the best polyquinoxaline (PQ). Its isothermal stability in air at 400 C is, however, decidedly inferior to the PQ. (Author, modified-PL)
