Abstract : The study of the stratigraphic characteristics of the snow cover and its development now is done by visual-instrumental observations in holes in the snow cover. The imperfection and the limitations of the method of making observations in holes has made it necessary to seek other means for making observations and checking on the state of the snow cover. Work was undertaken on the study of the acoustic properties of snow by ultrasonic methods and clarification of the basic and practical possibility of use of this method for study of the structure of the snow layer.
