Abstract : The receptor mechanism of the auditory system was modelled with the lateral-line organ of aquatic vertebrates upon the similarities of the structure and the embryological origin. The functioning of the afferent and the efferent double innervation of the sensory hair cell was also similar in both cases with respect to the stimulus discrimination and the wide dynamic range of sensation. The enhancement of the mechano-sensitivity of a hair cell by the increase of the environmental potassium concentration was discovered on the pit organ of the lateral-line system. The pit organ of the aquatic vertebrate may be a better model of the inner ear of higher animals especially on the high sensitivity of hearing and the potassium-rich endolymph, because the pit organ has both chemo- and mechano-sensitivity.
