Abstract : The study explains the design of a high speed Electro-Arc Printer and the tests conducted to evaluate the design. The tests established that the electro-conductive paper is best suited for use in the Electro-Arc Printer and that 14.9 microjoules of energy are required to print a dot on this paper. These printed dots, properly assembled, will form any numeral or letter of the alphabet. Minimum pulse amplitude necessary to ionize the spark gap is 300V and the minimum pulse width of 1.79 microseconds is sufficient time to deliver the energy to the paper. The dot size is linearly related to the voltage applied between the gap electrodes. Series resistance in the printing circuit is inversely proportional to the size of the dot printed. Based on the arcing pulse characteristics, the Electro-Arc Printer should be capable of printing 1,500,000 numerals or letters per minute. (Author)
