Abstract : The concept of mechanical cooperation in fibre networks is demonstrated. It is shown experimentally that fibres of nearly equal length cooperate in a linear, predictable manner, whereas those differing appreciably in length may display strong cooperation, the long fibres activating the short to produce synergetic effects. Particles differing in size by several orders of magnitude are shown not to cooperate. The development of network strength during beating is shown to be a complex function of the origin and pre-treatment of the fibers and of the beating equipment used. The equation derived by Almin et al. relating the network shear modulus to the bulk average fibre stiffness has been tested experimentally for some mixtures of model fibres. (Author)
