Abstract : The equilibria prevailing in aqueous sodium polysulfide solutions were disturbed by increasing the alkalinity or by decreasing X(s), the ratio between sulfur in oxidation state S(0) and sulfur in oxidation state S(--II). The adjustment of the system to the new equilibrium conditions was followed spectrophotometrically. The rate of rearrangement was found to increase with increased excess sulfur concentration, ionic strength, and temperature, and decrease with increased alkalinity level and X(s) level. The results obtained indicate that the reactions between polysulfide ions of different size and hydrogen sulfide ions are so rapid that they are not rate determining in thermal polysulfide decomposition or reactions between carbohydrates and polysulfide ions.
