Abstract : The decomposition of sodium polysulfide solutions was investigated in the range 70-130C. The results obtained in this investigation could be systematized by using equilibrium data reported elsewhere. The limit between stable and unstable polysulfide solutions could be described by an equation in (OH(-)) and (HS(-)). The effect of increased OH(-) concentration on the reaction rate was shown to be the result of two superimposed effects: a direct proportionality between alkalinity and the rate of polysufide decomposition, and a decomposition retardation resulting from the displacement of the equilibria towards smaller, more stable, polysulfide ions. A likely reaction model for the thermal decomposition of aqueous polysulfide solutions is discussed. Approximate equations for technical purposes are also given. (Author)
