Abstract : Better knowledge of how the interrelations between different xanthation parameters influence filterability is essential for process optimization. A study was made of the influence of different parameters and their interrelation on viscose filterability for the dry xanthation process, and the results are shown in the form of contour plots. The filterability of the xanthate solution reaches a maximum within certain temperature, reaction time, and CS2 ranges; these ranges are not independent of each other. Under normal conditions, the optimum lies very roughly at 30C and 100 min at 36% CS2. Pulps with an extremely low resistance toward xanthation, however, give a better filtration at a lower xanthation temperature than the ordinary range of 28-32C. For the so called wet-churn process, the importance of the starting time for the wet xanthation step was examined. It has been demonstrated that the wet-churn process, when run in an optimal way, can give a somewhat better filterability than a dry xanthation process. Special equipment for this type of investigation is described. (Author)
