Abstract : The theory for overtones and combination bands in the vibrational Raman case has been formulated by introducing the concept of vibronic coupling. One of the main features is that the scattering tensor governing these types of processes is antisymmetrical. This is also the case for electronic Raman transitions of rare-earth ions, while it can also be shown that the intensities of electronic Raman transitions and those of overtones(vibrational Raman effect) are approximately equal in value.
