Abstract : The objective of this program was to establish the feasibility of utilizing amorphous semiconductor switches as the control elements in an electroluminescent display panel. This was accomplished by constructing and demonstrating a matrix addressable, 16 x 16 element display composed of 256 individual OVEL circuits, each OVEL consisting of a discrete, bulk electrode Ovonic Threshold Switch (OTS), an EL lamp segment and an appropriate series resistance. The source of power for the OVEL's was a square wave, ac supply. The package selected to house the OTS's was a rigid, tubular ceramic structure 0.070 inches in diameter and 0.090 inches in length. The switches and series resistors were mounted on 16 printed circuit boards which plugged directly onto the 16 x 16 element EL lamp fabricated on a glass substrate with NESA strip front electrodes and individual aluminum back electrodes to define the cells. In most cases performance equaled or exceeded contract specifications. The display exhibited certain limitations; namely, a narrow operational temperature range, line erase rather than random erase, and loading effects at high bit densities. Nevertheless, the realization of a fast, matrix addressable display with inherent memory and good brightness and contrast amply demonstrated the viability of the approach. (Author)
