Abstract : Certain conjugated bile salts have been shown to be inhibitors of folic polyglutamate hydrolase. This enzyme has been shown to be present in bile. The folic acid compounds of human bile have been studied. Portal blood has been shown to be free of folic polyglutamates proving prior hydrolysis. The enzyme has been shown to be present in hepatic lysosomes. Further studies in tropical sprue have shown malabsorption of folic polyglutamate. Enzyme levels in biopsies have been normal. The enzyme has been localized in intestinal mucosa to lysosomes and supernatant fractions. Studies are anticipated in the Dominican Republic in cooperation with the Dominican Army. (Author)
