Abstract : A probability density function was derived which can be used to calculate the probability that the future of a vessel at sea will be in a given region. The density function was derived for the following conditions: at the initial time the actual position of the vessel is a sample from a normal distribution with known mean and covariance matrix; the velocity of the vessel remains constant during the time period of interest; the speed of the vessel is a sample from a chi distribution; and the course of the vessel is a sample from an arbitrary distribution.
