Abstract : The purpose of the paper is to aid soil survey crews in the field. It is intended that information contained in this hanbook be useful both from the standpoint of agricultural and engineering surveys. Identification of the eight major species which attain tree size in the Permafrost Zone in Alaska is made easy by actual photographs illustrating tree form, branching habits, bark, leaves, and fruit. A brief discussion of the relative value of each of the eight species as an indicator of soil texture, ground water, and permafrost conditions is included. (Author)
