Abstract : A summary final report is given on the last phase of a project for the development of a methodology on the comparative study of incidents of violent social protest, the efforts of control, and broad social movements in the context of social system change. Techniques for the quantitative description of incidents of protest and connected events, based on the analysis of historical documents, have been designed. Guides for critical instance case studies, intended to supplement the quantitative data through detailed qualitative investigation, have been established. The project's frame of reference emphasizes event sequence analysis in conflict and mobilization. The methodology and frame of reference have been field tested by collecting data for a comprehensive inventory of relevant incidents for two societies of widely different characteristics. An Oriental society (China and a Western society (Germany)) were chosen. (Author)
