Abstract : The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of three different auditory environments on performance during a simple visual monitoring task. The vigilance task was the detection of an abnormally large deflection of a voltmeter needle making twenty uniform deflections per minute. The length of the watch was sixty minutes, during which thirty-two signals were presented. Twenty-four military officers were used as subjects, eight in each group. A statistical examination of the results was made to discover any statistically significant difference between the percentage of signals detected by each of the three groups. A significant decline in performance over time occurred. (Author)
