Abstract : The periodic operating mode of a neodymium glass laser was examined. The influence on emission parameters of heating of the active element in the course of laser operation was studied. It was noted that after switching on of cyclic pumping and cooling the laser operates for a certain period of time in the transition mode. In the course of the transition stage the energy, pulse duration, and emission divergence grow noticeably, tending to reach stationary values. A study was made of a model of this phenomenon, which explains it by the conversion of the equivalent laser resonator from plane-parallel to spherical. The parameters of the equivalent spherical resonator was evaluated. Experiments were conducted with the spherical resonator; they confirmed the correctness of the assumptions put forward. (Author)
