Abstract : Snow removal machines are designed to remove snow from highways. In contrast to the familiar one-way or V-type snowplows, they mechanically scoop up the snow, which subsequently is thrown clear for a considerable distance. In doing this, they avoid the formation of snowbanks, which the other types of plows usually pile up along the roadsides, and which may frequently develop into snowdrifts. For that reason, the desire is felt to use them on a widespread scale; however, at the present status of the technique, their cost of production and operation is very high, and they are therefore seldom used. In order to shed light on the various technical problems concerning these machines, measurements were carried out in the years 1940 to 1945 which have revealed interesting facts relative to their method of operation. The purpose of the report is to discuss the results obtained during the test runs involved. (Author)
