Abstract : Regression equations for estimating surface wind at 10 terminals in the estern United States were derived and tested on independent data. The predictors used were observed wind at initial time, 1000- and 500-mb geostrophic winds, and 1000-mb temperature. The temperatures and geostrophic winds were those predicted by numerical weather prediction models used by the weather Bureau. For a two month test period, the wind estimates from the equations were slightly more accurate than the wind forecasts made at local Weather Bureau offices. (Author)
