Abstract : Isothermal and adiabatic analyses have been made for both stress and strain controlled 'push-pull' axial fatigue tests. An energy criteria, postulated for fatigue failure, yields favorable comparisons between the results of analysis and experimentation; without the use of any posteriori fatigue data parameters being incorporated into the analysis. The approach of these analyses is then used to compute fatigue failure due to cumulative damage. Again, comparability between analytic and experimental results proves encouraging. Also, the conditions under which Miner's 'law' can be used for the computation of cumulative damage fatigue failure are explicitly set forth. As a result of the success of the above analyses, a generalized theory of fatigue failure is developed. Several problems are then analyzed using the general theory and the solutions compared to experimental results. This last set of studies ostensibly delineate several problem areas that will be encountered in future fatigue work; as well as problems that must be resolved before attempting more intricate fatigue analyses.
