Abstract : An experimental study was made to obtain information that could be used to evaluate the present method of predicting dose rates in structures from finite fields of contamination. The results of these experiments were compared with reduction factors calculated by the 'engineering' and CONSTRIP methods. There is general agreement on the first story of the structure between experiment and both methods. There is a sizeable discrepancy between experiment and EM theory on upper stories, while the CONSTRIP results are in good relative agreement with experiment. Calculations for predicting the effects of 'pile-up' on dose rates in structures agree well with the above-ground experimental results, but are a factor of three higher than the experimental results for below-ground shelter areas.
