Abstract : The purpose of this dissertation is to examine inelastic backscattering of low-energy (approximately equal or < 300 eV) electrons as a means of investigating solid surfaces. In the present work, the amount of information that can be obtained with a single experimental system has been increased by increasing the number of variable experimental parameters. Besides being able to vary the primary and secondary electron energies, one may also vary the direction for which scattered or secondary electrons are detected.
