Abstract : The advantages of molecular gases in lasers with noncoherent optical pumping are well known and conditioned on the one hand by a relatively broad spectral pumping-light absorption band, and on the other by a relatively narrow working-transition line width. One such laser - the photodissociation laser - has been in existence for a long time already. The present paper proposes an infrared molecular laser with optical pumping to the vibrational-rotational band of the molecule in the electron ground state, and noncoherent emission from an 'immovable' shock wave arising during steady escape of the working mixture from the nozzle under conditions of incomplete expansion of the gas into the atmosphere. The composition of this gas can either correspond or not with that of the working mixture. Everywhere below, for simplicity, by working mixture the authors mean the mixture CO2 + N2 + He. In this, helium plays the same role as in CO2 lasers with electrical discharge. The nitrogen mixture is not necessary to achieve inversion, but it proves favorable, laser level and, secondly, to expansion of the vibrational-rotational pumping absorption band.
