Abstract : The interface between explosively-bonded metals frequently exhibits a wavelike profile which has been associated with weldments having superior mechanical properties. Previous theories were essentially qualitative, in that they described possible metal flow configurations, but did not predict conditions under which waves are either initiated or discontinued. The mechanism proposed in the paper demonstrates that the wave-formation process during metal-to-metal collisions is not a unique phenomenon, and predicts the appearance of wavelike interfaces.
