Abstract : Experimental results on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of stiffened thin-walled circular cylinders with large spacing of the stiffeners are presented. It is pointed out that the postbuckling loads are considerably raised by the stiffening, if and only if the stiffeners are arranged such that the formation of a postbuckling pattern like that of the unstiffened cylinder is essentially disturbed. Particular attention is devoted to the torsional postbuckling patterns appearing at cylinders subjected to axial load or external hydrostatic pressure. (Author)
