Abstract : Measurement was made of blood glucose, liver glycogen, phosphorylase, and glucose-6-phosphatase in rats treated with d-amphetamine at ground level and at a simulated altitude of 8,000 ft. An increase in blood sugar levels was obtained in drug-treated animals in both environments. Altitude exposure per se also increased blood sugar levels, but the increase was not additive at altitude following drug treatment. Liver glucose-6-phosphatase activity was unaffected by drug or altitude exposure. Glycogen levels were lower in both amphetamine-treated groups, while phosphorylase activity was increased. The response of these two parameters was the same at ground level and at altitude. (Author)
