Abstract : The present research program has been carried out to obtain more detailed information about the propagation phenomena and the origin of ELF-waves in the frequency range of the SCHUMANN-resonances, i.e. between 4 and 24 Hz. Therefore simultaneous measurements of both the magnetic and the electric field have been performed by two almost identically equipped recording stations. One station is located near Kingston, R. I., and supervised by members of the University of Rhode Island, the other one, operated by the authors, is situated in Brannenburg, W-Germany. The results of these cooperative investigations will permit prediction of the state of the lower ionosphere and of some types of Solar events. The low level of the measured signals demanded the construction of sensitive antennas and amplifiers, while the elimination of the very intense manmade interferences required the development of appropriate filtering systems. These difficulties have been successfully overcome by the use of special equipment at the field stations. The present report gives a description of the constructional features of the Brannenburg field station. A review of the principles of operation is followed by descriptions of the different units of the appratus. In addition, some interesting details of the circuitry are presented to give examples of the solution of specific problems. (Author)
